Highlands to Caribbean Wildlife Expedition


 Day 1:

Pura Vida! Welcome to San Jose and to the experiential learning adventure of a lifetime. Your bilingual naturalist guides will meet you at the airport and you will wind up into the mystic highlands. Settle into your off-the grid, family run eco-lodge, and meet the Seelye Family. Share a delicious home-cooked meal and hear the amazing story of this resilient and inspiring family.

Overnight: Seelye Family Lodge

Day 2:

This morning enjoy time on the farm and a delicious breakfast made of local ingredients. After breakfast, head down the road to take a tour of an award winning organic, shade grown coffee plantation. Meet with Arturo, the charismatic owner of the plantation and learn about the steps he is taking to support his community and environmentally friendly coffee. Enjoy lunch with Arturo. In the afternoon, return to the Seelye farm to go on a magical hike around the highland Paramo forests, led by one of your hosts who has walked this forest for over 20 years.

Day 3:

This morning we learn about life on an off-the grid farm–helping to milk cows, gathering eggs from the chickens, feeding trout, and discovering the many strategies for sustainable living that the Seelye’s employ. Enjoy your last morning in the cloud forest before heading to Caribbean foothills. Upon arrival, serpentarium which allows the rare opportunity to ‘meet’ some of the forests’ most feared residents as we learn from the country’s foremost expert about the evolving status of the fer-de-lance population.

Day 4:

This morning we head to the charming rural village of Tres Equis where we will meet Rafael Montenegro. “Don Rafa” is the heart and soul of the rural village of Tres Equis, a warm-hearted leader who works tirelessly to help his community and make visitors feel at home. We visit the local school where we have the opportunity to interact by sharing books and hopefully a soccer game! This is a great opportunity to practice Spanish and get a glimpse into real life in a Costa Rican village. In the afternoon, we head to the southern Caribbean coast.

Day 5:

Today we take a trip to the town at the end of the road, Manzanillo, a small town that hugs the crystalline water and is touched by Primary Rainforest.Here we have the opportunity to meet Tino and hike with him in theGandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge. Along the way, we travel from the beach path into the jungle, where the diversity of flora and fauna is beautiful and abundant. Tino will explain the medicinal, culinary and other uses of many of the trees, fruits and plants along the way. In the afternoon we swim at one of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica. Punta Uva is a magical spot where the forest meets the sea and monkeys are often spotted eating sea grapes on the point.

Day 6:

After breakfast we visit an Animal Rescue Center in the near-by village of Playa Chiquita. Learn from a resident scientist about the rehabilitation of monkeys, sloth, birds and wildcats. This is an amazing opportunity to have contact with the animals we have seen in the forest thus far and learn even more about these fascinating creatures. Afterwards we have a free afternoon. You can relax on the beach and bask in the turquoise water, take a surfing lesson, visit a chocolate farm, visit a local indigenous reserve & iguana project, enjoy a massage or just set up camp on the beach. The day is up to you to enjoy. Your guide/driver will be available for you today if you need him to take you to a restaurant or one of the nearby beaches.

Day 7:

Early this morning you head straight to the banks of the El Carmen River for an unforgettable day of basic rafting and river float trip. This most scenic river slices through beautiful rainforest. You stop along the river to view waterfalls and enjoy a delicious lunch. Once out of the river you head to the base of Arenal, one of Costa Rica’s most active volcanoes! In the evening you head to Eco-Termales Hot Springs to enjoy a delicious dinner and thesoothing hot springs.

Day 8:

Today you wake early for a morning tour on horseback! You take a very scenic and safe trail along Lake Arenal and through a variety of terrain including the rainforest, across small rivers, and to the lookout point of theever-active Arenal Volcano. You ride beside lush and beautiful rainforest while spotting toucans, Montezuma Oropendolas, sloth, monkeys, the elusive paca, and other tropical creatures. The lake trail is safe all year-round, and healthy, well-cared for and trained horses are provided. Afterwards, you fly through the canopy on a zipline, an amazing way to experience the rainforest. Expert guides assist you safely through on this zipline course through different layers of the pristine rainforests from the time you leave the ground until you rappel back down to the forest floor.

Overnight: La Fortuna Area

Day 9:

After breakfast you head to the La Fortuna waterfall.Take a short and steep hike to the base of this brilliant waterfall and enjoy a swim in the second pool with a view of this stunning wonder. After the waterfall we say farewell to La Fortuna and head back to the capital city of San Jose.

Day 10:

This morning we head to the airport, filled with memories of our Costa Rican Adventure!
