Community Service
Collaboration. Connection. Meeting needs through meaningful exchanges.

Community service is a pillar of the Costa Rican Adventures experience. Over the years we have made lasting relationships with local schools and communities. Each project is developed according to the specific requests of the school or community with whom we are working. We ask these groups if they would be willing to work with student travelers from North America, and their answer is invariably, “YES!” They tell us what their needs might be, and we find a way to collaborate to meet those needs in a sustainable way.

Our community service projects are not just work. They are intercultural experiences where we group up local Costa Rican or Indigenous students with traveling students to get specific jobs done. Friends are made and projects are accomplished. CRA has a staff of individuals who facilitate the projects in direct collaboration with local communities. We believe in creating sustainable projects that are ongoing. When projects breathe a life of their own, ownership is created and local people and schools reap real benefits from these meaningful exchanges.

Projects may include building schoolhouses, painting murals, installing gravity fed water systems, digging correct drainage in lowland areas, reforestation, planting an organic garden, laying cement sidewalks, or leveling out a new soccer field. And speaking of soccer, it is almost guaranteed that a soccer game is kicked off at the end of each project. A way to celebrate the day’s work!

If you are interested in adding community service to your itinerary please mention it when talking to one of our trip planners. Also check out our blog for slideshows and stories from past projects.
