Itinerary:
Day 1
An early flight gets you into Costa Rica by mid-day with time to
head directly to the beautiful Caribbean coast. The drive takes
us immediately into Braulio Carillo National Park, Costa Rica's
largest. Enjoy our first exposure to the rainforest between the
giant elephant ear plants and the waterfalls that occur regularly
alongside the road. Then pass through a veritable ocean of banana
plantations before we reach the port city of Limon. Once you meet
the Caribbean Sea, head directly to the Samasati Nature Retreat
Center- our base for the next several days.
Overnight: Samasati Nature Retreat, Home Creek, Talamanca

Day
2
Start the day with an early morning yoga session at our lodge. Then,
travel to the nearby KekoLdi Indigenous Reserve with our native guide,
learning about the culture and customs of the Bribri people. We begin
with a visit to the Iguana Farm that has reintroduced over 10,000
green iguanas back into the surrounding forest over the past ten years.
Then, on a two-hour hike through secondary rainforest, we are introduced
to the forest from the Bribri perspective, learning about the plants
that have provided food, medicine, clothing, and shelter for thousands
of years. A native lunch is served with many ingredients harvested
from their understory gardens. Our afternoon practice takes place
at Punta Uva, one of Costa Rica's most breathtaking beaches where
the rainforest practically pours into the sea.
Overnight: Samasati Nature Retreat, Home Creek, Talamanca

Day
3
Early morning yoga takes place at the lodge. Then we prepare for our
two-day adventure at Punta Mona Center for Sustainable Living and
Education. The hike through the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge
takes us on the only path into our remote retreat center. Along the
way, we travel from the beach path into the jungle, where the diversity
of flora and fauna is both beautiful and extensive. A local guide
from the neighboring village of Manzanillo will take us through the
trail and show off the wonders of his “backyard” while
explaining the medicinal, food and other uses of many of the trees,
fruits and plants along the way. These days at Punta Mona are an exercise
in sustainable living, as most food we eat will be harvested from
our extensive organic gardens with more than 150 varieties of fruit
trees. Our energy comes from solar panels and the buildings are built
with wood from nearby fallen trees. Before dark, we will gather in
the yoga house, located in the heart center of the property, for our
evening yoga session. After dinner, meet with members of the community
to learn more about the history and current and future projects of
Punta Mona. After nightfall, walk the beach in total darkness in search
of nesting leatherback turtles some of which weigh over one thousand
pounds! (March-June)

Day
4
Spend the day enjoying the incredible beauty of the farm and swim,
relax, and gather local fruits and vegetables for our night's feast.
Tour the gardens to learn about permaculture, the philosophy and methodology
that inspired the design of the farm. Yoga sessions held in the morning
and afternoon. Massage therapists are available for private beachside
sessions. *Option to return to Samasati in the late afternoon.

Day 5
Enjoy another leisurely day of yoga, hammocks, surf and fun at Punta
Mona or at Samasati. On the boat back to town, look for some of the
three species of dolphins that live right off shore. Visit an organic
chocolate 'factory' hidden away on a jungle trail and learn (and taste!)
more about the production of this rainforest treat. Enjoy the evening
back in Puerto Viejo.
Overnight: Samasati Nature Retreat, Home Creek, Talamanca
Day 6
In the morning, head to the banks of the Pacuare River for an unforgettable
day of white water rafting. Stop along the way to the river for a
short morning yoga session followed by breakfast. This most scenic
river slices through virgin rainforest and plunges through mountain
gorges which drop the most beautiful waterfalls alongside your raft.
Stop on the riverside for an excellent picnic lunch. After you take
out and dry off, we make our way to the mighty slopes of the Arenal
Volcano, Costa Rica's most active volcano.
Overnight: Lomas del Volcan, La Fortuna

Day
7
Our morning yoga session will soothe sore muscles. After breakfast
we head to the gorgeous Fortuna waterfall by horseback. Our trail
leads us through pasture land and farms. The falls pour out of the
rainforest and into beautiful pools perfect for a swim. Practice your
sun salutations on the edge of the water, warming up before you dip.
In the afternoon we have a choice of activities. Mountain bike around
parts of Lake Arenal~the country’s largest lake and source of
most hydroelectric power. Or walk through the river and waterfalls
of the Venado Caves where we will see marine fossils, bats, spiders
and crickets as well as beautiful limestone rocks, stalactites, stalagmites
and corals. In the evening relax in magical hot springs and witness
lava exploding out of the volcano against the backdrop of night. A
rare sight to behold! Overnight: Lomas del Volcan, La Fortuna
Day 8
Savor the rainforest for one final time before heading back to the
capital city in time to catch late morning or afternoon flights
back home. We hope that this week together has brought awareness,
expanded boundaries, and inspired conscious action; and that as
each person boards the plane, no one goes home unchanged. Namaste.
