Day 5
Pass through the traditional
Mennonite village of Upper Barton Creek on our way to the
Barton Creek Cave. The Mennonites came to Belize
in 1958 and live traditional farming lives without many modern amenities.
Canoe through Barton Creek within a cave system
where at times the cave roof is only a few feet above our heads!
We then depart for the Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary,
an environmental education center that serves as a model of conservation
land stewardship. The Sanctuary consists of 1,070 acres of tropical
forest, riverine and savanna habitats. We’ll learn a bit about
the history of Monkey Bay before gathering around an evening campfire.
Overnight: Monkey Bay
Day 6:
Today we visit the Community
Baboon Sanctuary for a guided day excursion to see Black
Howler Monkeys in the wild. We begin with museum tour, trail
hike through the community sanctuary at Bermudian Landing
Village, and break for a traditional Creole lunch
served under the shade of mango trees by a local family. After lunch,
we visit the Belize Zoo and observe Belize’s
unique animals in their natural surroundings: howler monkey, jaguar,
harpy eagle, scarlet macaw, tapir and crocodile to name a few.
Overnight: Monkey Bay
Day 7:
We drive through the larger Garifuna
town of Dangriga we catch a boat that will take us to the
tiny island of Tobacco Caye- an island so small we can
watch the sun rise and set from the same place! We start our underwater
exploration of the barrier reef this afternoon
with our first snorkel session right from the shore.
