Discover the wonders of Costa Rica and Belize as a traveling Jewish community!

Home to twelve major life zones and an incredible 5% of all life forms on Earth, Costa Rica has a geographic and biological diversity unmatched by any country its size. From pristine beaches to active volcanoes, rainforests to cloud forests, this tropical paradise is also known as one of the safest Latin American countries, with a 90 percent literacy rate, no military, a strong democracy, and world-leading environmental policies.

In this 3-week action-packed journey, we integrate adventure travel, community service, and exposure to indigenous cultures with ancient Jewish wisdom about the Earth. Full of adventurous activities in some of Costa Rica's most beautiful areas, participants explore a variety of connections--connections to Judaism, to the Earth, and to their traveling companions. Our 23 days in this awe-inspiring country are carefully planned with regard to safety, environmental impact, and plain old fun.

Itinerary Highlights
Spend Shabbat in the Jungle
Celebrate special Jungle Shabbat in the rainforest! The magical beauty of this remote area is a perfect place to sing and feast for the creation of the universe. Spend the day exploring the jungle with friends or hanging out on the beach.

Visit Our Remote Beachfront Center for Sustainable Living and Education
Costa Rican Adventures' farm at Punta Mona (Monkey Point) provides an exercise in sustainable living in a gorgeous and remote setting. Spend the days harvesting fruits and vegetables from the organic gardens and awaiting the harvest of local fisherman. During the days, view dolphins playing off-shore, ride sea-kayaks through a mangrove-lined lagoon, and create arts and crafts from natural materials. At night, make chocolate from locally grown organic cacao beans, and take a walk down the beach to watch leatherback sea turtles lay their eggs in the sand.

Learn about Indigenous Culture
While hiking through the Kekoldi Indigenous Reserve with a native Bribri guide, learn about the culture and customs of the Bribri People, one of the few remaining indigenous groups in Costa Rica. Visit the Iguana Farm, and learn about this community's efforts to save the endangered green iguana from extinction. Learn about their deep connection to the forest and the environmental threats to their way of life. A native lunch is served with all ingredients coming from the Reserve!

Ride the Rapids through the Rainforest
Head to the banks of the Pacuare River for an unforgettable overnight whitewater rafting trip on class III and IV rapids. This scenic river slices through virgin rainforest and plunges through mountain gorges dropping the most beautiful waterfalls right alongside your raft.

Zip through the Canopy
Traverse from tree to tree using pulleys on horizontal traverse cables. This exhilarating experience allows you to sail through the treetops of the canopy and over the trails far below. Expert guides assist you in this exciting journey through the different layers of the virgin cloud forests and explain the orchids, bromeliads and exotic birdlife that surrounds you.

Meet the Costa Rican Jewish Community
Spend the weekend with the Jewish community of San Jose. Meet Costa Rican Jewish teens, attend a Shabbat Service at the local synagogue, join a Jewish host family for a Shabbat dinner, and learn about the Serpharan tradition, a combination Ashkenaz and Sephardic traditions.

Serve Local Communities with Tikkun Olam Projects
Provide service to local host communities while exploring the balance of giving and receiving. Past projects have included planting gardens and painting murals at local schools, helping with building and planting projects at the Kekoldi Indigenous Reserve, and volunteering at a Woman's Cooperative Farm.

Celebrate Havdallah Under the Stars
As the sunset reflects into the sea, gather together to mark the end of Shabbat with song and ritual.

Learn to Surf
Take a surfing lesson to learn basic skills for riding the waves.

Witness Lava Flowing from an Active Volcano
Bathe in delightful hot springs at the base of Costa Rica's most active volcano. Witness red lava flows from the volcano observatory lookout.

Connect Judaism and Nature
Throughout the program, we will dip into Jewish wisdom about our natural world through text study, song, prayer, and discussion groups. Together we explore Jewish environmental ethics and contemplate our roles as stewards of the Earth.

Ride Horseback to Refreshing Waterfalls
Horseback ride through forests and fields to hidden waterfalls where invigorating pool await.

Taste Local Cuisines and Unique Tropical Fruits
Everywhere we go, meals will reflect regional specialties and locally grown crops. Delight in fresh fruits not readily available in North America.
